Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa)
2017. Directed by Makoto Shinkai.
Japan’s number one film last year finally received a U.S. release! “Your Name” is so beautiful that it left me speechless during the subtle yet epic finale.
Based on the novel of the same name by Shinkai, two strangers Mitsuha Miyamizu (Mone Kamishiraishi) and Taki Tachibana (Ryunosuke Kamiki) live separate lives. The duo suddenly switches places. I will spoil the film if I tell you anymore.
“Your Name” tackles complex themes, including discovering one’s identity, enabling compassion and sorrow, and supporting family and friends. Despite the meandering pace, “Your Name” will resonate with you, regardless of your gender or age. I recommend attending the subtitled version if you are able. One of my favorite films released during the 2017.
