Beyond the Lights

2014. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood

Beyond the Lights at first glance is a love story about a troubled pop star and a soul searching police officer that is, at it's core a deconstruction of the Icon Female Superstar.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker deliver searing performances as the couple striving to overcome their various lifestyles in the name of love. What makes this one rise above the ranks of date night rom-coms is that it truly has a soul. It's heartbreaking and tender in equal portions and hits every note of the common story with a cadence that few other films can mimic.

Featuring amazing performances and some gorgeous costumes by Sandra Hernandez I have to wonder if the reason this film didn't get much advertising hype has to do with it's predominately minority cast. It's easy to think this film was for a target audience, but I truly believe that it's theme was aimed at everyone. Love is on display here and it transcends skin color.

The haunting performance of Nina Simone's Blackbird is the centerpiece, a song so appropriate to the film's theme that is demands attention.

Available now on Netflix, Beyond the Light's isn't high drama or a film that's going to change your life. However, if you're looking for something with more depth when endlessly debating what to watch next with your significant other, this one is a great pick.
