2001. Directed by Sean Penn
Have you ever left something undone in your life that haunts you to this day?
That is the core theme of Sean Penn's harrowing detective story, The Pledge. It's hard for me to review without spoiling, so I'm going to keep this one brief. It's worth it for Jack Nicholson's greatest performance of his career under the careful guidance of Penn (this film being his masterwork) who uses small details and subtle strokes of darkness to deliver a tragic, soul crushing piece of film.
There are many elements at play in this borderline horror story of obsession as it's hero slowly, unflinching sails towards oblivion. An oblivion of his own creation.
Worth it, but forewarning, this is dark, dark stuff. Not violent, or scary, just downright depressing and haunting.
Loved every minute of it.
