The Forbidden Room

2015. Directed by Guy Maddin

This film is such a treasure.

The Forbidden Room is a homage to the silent film era, without being a silent film. It has all the hallmarks of the silent era, but blends them with the creative wild west of the era just beyond the silent, when sound and color were just beginning to be experimented with.

The narrative structure takes the tired story within a story and gives it a psychedelic bath before throwing down the rabbit hole, creating a nightmarish fever dream that would make Lewis Caroll blush, while simultaneously laugh uncontrollably at the perfectly placed jokes with jokes that slither through the story.

The entire film looks as if three day old coffee was spilled over the film reel and it's glorious. In the end, The Forbidden Room is art house at it's finest and pure Maddin. If you're looking for something truly unique than the average Hollywood fair, this is the film for you.

I'll end by saying this kind of film is not for everyone. It's on Netflix. Give it 10 minutes and if it hasn't hooked you, move on. If it does though, you're in for a ride.

Available for streaming on Netflix.
