This film....wow.

Society

1989. Directed by Brian Yuzna

This might be one of the most shocking films I've seen in a long time.

The set up is familiar. The son of an extremely wealthy socialite family is having trouble fitting in. He thinks he may be adopted and is somehow different from his family and friends that all embrace the reckless excess of the wealthy lifestyle.

Featuring hilarious 80's motifs including ridiculous hair styles, outrageous costuming (big credit to Robin Lewis West), and an indulgent color palette of crisp black and whites contrasted by the ever present neon tropes of the 80's this is the epitome of cult cinema.

The plot is ridiculous at times, but none of it matters as the final 30 minutes are a visual effects phantasmagoria (that rival Carpenter's The Thing) that easily steal the show.

Disgusting, horrific, and maniacal, the climax is the stuff of champagne drenched nightmares. A cosmic orgy apocalypse, Society's insane conclusion is the centerpiece of an otherwise standard criticism of the wealthy elite.

In Brian Yuzna's full throttle debutante's alien massacre, the rich literally feed on the poor.

Not for the squeamish, but an absolute must for cult horror buffs.

Available on DVD and Blu Ray from Arrow Video.
