Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

1970. Directed by Russ Meyer

The great Roger Ebert had a hand in this insanity. This film is a satire of the 70's free love movement and also a Sunset Boulevard Hollywood poison pill, wrapped in a barbie doll package.

It's easy to criticize this film. It's characters are bland, the script is a nightmare, and basically everything is a mess. But, it is in that mess that I found the genius of Ebert's message.

A cautionary fairy tale, this film is a fable about Hollywood excess. It takes every 70's trope and twists it into a darker,
malignant version of the theme it seeks to break down.

The sex, drugs, and music (the soundtrack is key) all combine to bring the viewer a buffet of the absurd. It's a showpiece of excess and a lesson on excess in the same breath.

Loved every minute.
